  • This family can be traced back to Maryland, though it is not clear when they got there or where they came from. The first definite ancestor is Christopher, who might have been the son of a Captain William Parrott born earlier in Prince George's county in Maryland. This represents an attempt to consolidate all the loose branches floating around in the Internet, so the information on this page should be used as a research guide, and not as an ultimate authority. Although this family changed their surname spelling from Parrott to Parriott early on, at least one branch reverted to Parrott.

"Sergeant In The Continental Army, 2nd Maryland Regiment. (Soldiers pension number - W18714) Participated In The Battles Of Trenton, Princeton, Brandywine (Wounded), Germantown, Monmouth (Wounded), Stoney Point And Yorktown. DAR records (for Ancestor A088077) show Sergeant Christopher Parrott served under Col Howard, 2nd Regt, Maryland. Later in life he owned a farm on New Creek; 18W per 1815 Directory of Virginia Landowners Hampshire County (now Mineral County in VW)

"SAR records indicate he was buried in Romney Cemetery, Hamphire County WV \endash burial location not evaluated. Some have speculated he might have been buried on his farm. If a marker exists it may be a simple headstone marked "C. P." or variation of his surname, ie Parrot, Parrott. It wasn't until about 1836 that surviving sons added a "i" to the spelling of the family name.

"The Old Presbyterian Cemetery (in Romney WV) records offer a lot of tantalizing clues that match some of Christopher's profile, but offers no record of his burial there, there are however records for other Revolutionary War soldiers that were interred in that cemetery. So if he were buried there, he would have been in very good company."

A Record of Settlement, Organization, Progress and Achievement Volume II 1917
    By Arthur C. Wakeley

Ralph E. Parrott, of Omaha, manager of the Oliver Chilled Plow Company, proves in his business career the fact that success is not th$ result of genius or of fortunate circumstances, as some contend, but is rather the outcome of clear judgment, wisdom, experience and industry on the part of the individual, for starting out in life empty handed, he has worked his way steadily upward and each forward step has brought him a broader outlook and wider opportunities. He was born upon a farm near Danville, Iowa, March 21, 1874. The family name was originally spelled Parriott but several generations have adopted the present form. Descended from Virginian ancestry, his grandfather and his great-grandfather, both of whom bore the name of William Parrott, were natives of the Old Dominion. The former became a farmer of that state, owning a large plantation and a large number of slaves, but long prior to the Civil war he liberated his negroes and removed to Iowa in 1833, settling on a farm in Des Moines county. At one time he owned a large portion of the land now within the corporation limits of the city of Burlington and was one of the pioneer residents there, contributing to its early development and assisting largely in promoting the interests of civilization in that region. His son, Christopher C. Parrott, was born on the old homestead farm near Danville, Iowa, on the 17th of February, 1839, and in that state was married to Miss Lydia A. Clark, who is now living with her son Ralph in Omaha, Mr. Parrott having passed away on the 15th of February, 1900.

The youthful experiences of Ralph E. Parrott were those of the farm bred boy who works in the fields through the summer months and in the winter seasons attends the district schools. He thus pursued his education in Des Moines county, Iowa, to the age of sixteen years, when he entered the Orchard City Business College at Burlington, where he studied for a time. His initial step in commercial circles was made as a clerk in a store in New London, Iowa, where he remained for two years, and later he became a clerk in a dry goods store in Burlington, where he also spent a similar period. He then returned to New London and for a year engaged in teaching school. In 1902 he entered the employ of the Deenng Harvester Company at Ottumwa, Iowa, where he continued for a year, and the succeeding two years were spent in charge of a retail implement business which he owned at New London, Iowa. He remained proprietor of the establishment for six years although he did not give personal supervision to it for four years of that period. In 1905 he went to Chicago and became purchasing agent for the large mail order house of the John M. Smyth Company, spending two years in that connection. He was afterward with the D. M. Sechler Implement & Carriage Company of Moline, Illinois, as traveling salesman in Iowa, representing that house upon the road for nine years, at the end of which time the factory was taken over by the Oliver Chilled Plow Company and Mr. Parrott opened a branch for that corporation at Des Moines, having charge there for a year. On the expiration of that period he was sent to Omaha to open a branch in this city and he is now manager of the business at this point. He is a man of marked enterprise, whose constantly expanding powers have brought him larger opportunities and greater responsibilities and today he figures prominently in the commercial circles of this city.

On the 26th of November. 1896, in New London, Iowa, Mr. Parrott was married to Miss Blanch Knickerbocker, a daughter of Emory S. and Amanda M. (Williams) Knickerbocker, the former a native of New York and the latter of Iowa. Her paternal grandparents were Philo and Abbie M. (Flint) Knickerbocker, also natives of the Empire state.

Mr. and Mrs. Parrott are members of the Presbyterian church and in politics he is a democrat, but while interested in the success of the party he has never become an active worker in its ranks, preferring to concentrate his undivided attention upon commercial interests. Keenly alive to every new avenue opened in the natural ramifications of trade, he has passed through the pitfalls into which unrestrained progressiveness is so often led and has thus been able to focus his energies in directions where fruition is certain. His course, too, has been characterized by a native justice expressing itself in correct principle and practice.

Ralph married Blanche Knickerbocker on 26 Nov 1896 in Henry Co., Iowa. Blanche was born on 29 Aug 1874 in Henry Co., Iowa and died on 4 Jan 1957 in Los Angeles Co., California, at age 82. They had no children.

Notes: Joseph Marshall Parriott, the chief designer for a wide range of objects including the stainless-steel Steam-O-Matic iron, the WaterPik and a roomy and comfortable taxicab that never went into production, died March 12 at the Bassett Hospital in Cooperstown, N.Y.

Mr. Parriott, 79, taught industrial design at Pratt Institute in Brooklyn. His boxy-looking taxicab, designed by a student-and-faculty team at the institute's School of Art and Design, was only 2 inches longer than a Volkswagen Beetle but provided more head and leg room than a Cadillac limousine.

When a full-scale mock-up of the vehicle was shown in 1971, a spokesman for Pratt said that the project had been undertaken because "the modern taxi satisfies neither the passenger, the driver nor the owner. It seems to satisfy only the manufacturers and the junk dealers, and it accomplishes that feat in the short space of two years."

Michael J. Lazar, then New York City's taxi commissioner, praised the car as "the kind of innovative design we are looking for." But "Parriott's chariot" never went into production.

He graduated from Elliott Business School and was later elected County Auditor and began work for the State Highway Department, eventually moving on to C.F. Lytle Construction Co., where he stayed for 35 years in the ascending positions of secretary, vice president and president. As some $40 billion in projects were in the proposal stage awaiting blueprints, Parrott addressed a construction symposium held by the American Society of Civil Engineers, conceding that the inflated costs of the time were about the same on average as for most other services and commodities in the recovering post-war economy.

She was predeceased by her husband, James D. Parriott, and survived by her two children, Jim and Sara.

Mary was truly a classy lady, unafraid of voicing her opinion, even if unpopular, but always gracious to those who stood on the other side of the fence. A woman of great style and substance, she was a passionate liberal, supporter of the arts, and an artist herself. Ironically, toward the end of her life, she was concerned about "being a burden to her family," never understanding how very much she was loved and enjoyed. Mary was a unique woman ahead of her time, and leaves a hole in the lives of all who had the privilege of knowing her.

Roger married Carolyn A. Kuntz on 23 Aug 1941. Carolyn was born on 13 Feb 1917 and died on 2 Nov 2006 in Iowa, at age 89.

The child from this marriage was:

254 F    i. Patricia Ann Parrott was born on 28 Jan 1943 in Burlington, Des Moines Co., Iowa and died on 21 Oct 2021 in Ashland, Jackson Co., Oregon, at age 78.

Notes: Patricia Ann Parrott was born on January 28, 1943 in Burlington, Iowa to Roger and Caroline (Kuntz) Parrott of Danville, Iowa. Growing up on the Parrott family farm indelibly shaped her independent personality. She graduated from Danville High School in 1961 and then earned a BA in education from the State University of Iowa in 1965. Deciding not to become a grade-school teacher and at the behest of her aunt Marjorie Fitzsimmons, she moved to Chicago and started as an editor and writer in the textbook division of Scott-Foresman Publishers. After marrying her first husband, Thomas Gundlach, a budding lawyer, they moved to San Francisco. In 1971, they welcomed a son Christopher. She ably juggled her maternal duties and her writing career. She developed a knack for crafting entertaining ways for students to learn vocabulary, history and environmental awareness. She found many playmates \endash and life-long friends \endash among the families in her San Francisco neighborhood.

In 1985, Trish married Charlie West, a financial analyst at Pacific Bell. (He was also an Iowan, born in Spirit Lake in 1944.) The wedding was celebrated on a sunny April afternoon in Golden Gate Park's Shakespeare Garden. Her son Christopher and Charlie's son Michael stood, smiling, beside them. The happy couple honeymooned in the Greek Islands. In 1986, they moved to Oakland, California, where Trish continued her textbook writing. She also wrote engaging columns for several neighborhood newspapers. Her columns often appeared under the moniker "Westword." Trish and Charlie moved to Mendocino, California in 2000. When Trish wasn't enjoying bicycle rides to the Pacific Ocean cliffs, she continued freelancing and wrote merchant interviews for the local chamber of commerce newsletter. In 2005, the peripatetic couple moved to Ashland, Oregon, where Trish volunteered at the local library and the North Mountain Park Nature Center and with the Start Making a Reader Today (SMART) program at a nearby elementary school.

Trish loved wide-ranging conversations, introducing friends and visitors to Ashland's best shopping bargains, live music, walking everywhere, and baking. She was a voracious reader. She delighted in making new friends and hearing their diverse family histories. Valentine's Day was her favorite holiday, and she hosted parties for almost 40 consecutive years. Heart-shaped cookies and art activities for children and adults enlivened those festive afternoons.

On October 8, 2021 Trish slipped and fell. She never recovered from the trauma of the fall and passed away peacefully on October 21 as Charlie held her hand.

Trish is survived by her husband, her brothers Jim Parrott, Tom Parrott and his wife Sally, Charlie's son Michael West, his wife Melyssa and their son Coltrane. Sadly, Trish's son Christopher Gundlach died in 2017. Trish would want to be remembered as gregarious, compassionate, sentimental, and fond of earrings, frozen yogurt, berets and the color purple.

Trish loved libraries. If you are so inclined, consider a memorial donation in the name of Patricia Parrott West to the Danville Library, 102 N. Main Street, Danville, IA 52623.

Notes: MOIFA Procures Loan Items For '58 Indonesian Art Show

Preparations are already under way at the Museum of International Folk Art for the spring show "The Art of Indonesia" which will be put on exhibition in April adn continue to through the summer.

Allen Parrott, a curator of the Museum, has just returned from a trip to the East where he made arrangements for loan items frm the Metropolitan Museum, the American Museum of Natural History and the Cooper Union Museum in New York, the University of Pennsylvania Museum, Philadelphia, the Cleveland Art Museum and Chicago Museum of Natural History. In addition there will be items from the Textile Museum, Washington, D.C., the Peabody Museum at Harvard University and museums in Seattle, Los Angeles and other western cities.

Parrott is particularly well fitted to assemble the Indonesian show. For three years he traveled the islands of the mid-Pacific and also spent three years in Japan where he first became interested in Island art. His own personal collection of island art is one of the best in the United States.

Parrott, who is a graduate of the University of California at Berkeley where he majored in art history, has been a curator of the Museum of International Folk Art since joining the organization three years ago.

In speaking of the forthcoming exhibition Parrott said that the area that will be encompassed is one that is relatively untouched.

It is mainly the territory usually referred to as the Dutch East Indies, Borneo, Sumatra, Celebes, Java and many smaller islands. Parrott said folk art of areas east and west of this region has become fairly well known but that there is almost a void when it comes to this particular section. For this reason, the show promises to be unusual and one of the first major presentations of the art this little known region.

Floor plans for the exhibit are being prepared by Robert Plertenberg, Santa Fe architect. who has volunteered his services in making an interesting and unique presentation. The over-all concept of the show and its arrangement and selection will be Parrott's responsibility.

Allen married Alice Kagawa in 1956. Alice was born on 12 Feb 1929 in Honolulu, Honolulu Co., Hawaii and died on 11 Sep 2009 in Santa Fe Co., New Mexico, at age 80.

    Notes: From her Wikipedia entry:
"Kagawa met Allen Morgan Parrott on a visit with her students to the International Folk Art Museum in Santa Fe in 1956, where he was an assistant curator. They married the day after school ended that year, and she left her teaching position. The newly married couple moved into a four-room adobe home on Canyon Road in Santa Fe, where they lived for the rest of their lives, adopting two sons, Ben and Tim."

    ========
Alice Kagawa Parrott, a well-known weaver and Santa Fe resident since 1956, died Friday at her Canyon Road home. She was 80.

A nephew, Paul Kagawa, said she had contracted pneumonia about a month ago and never recovered.

She operated one of Santa Fe's earliest craft shops, The Market, located on Palace Avenue adjacent to The Shed restaurant. She also designed the original Santa Fe Opera usher's uniforms and was an active member of the Acequia Madre ditch association.

Her achievements as a textile artist received acclaim in features that appeared in Life and Smithsonian magazines and the book Santa Fe Originals: Women of Distinction.

During her career, she was the recipient of a Louis Comfort Tiffany Foundation grant and an American Craft Council Fellowship. She received commissions for massive installations in public buildings, and her works are included in a number of museum collections, including the Victoria and Albert Museum in London and the National Museum of Decorative Arts in Norway.

She was the subject of one-woman shows in such venues as the Museum of Contemporary Crafts in New York.

A 1962 New York Times article began: "It takes thousands of marigold blossoms, black walnuts, onion skins, peach leaves and small bugs to achieve some of the colors in the hand-woven wall hangings, rugs, blankets and pillow covers that now hang in the Museum of Contemporary Crafts. It is from these seemingly unusual sources that Alice Kagawa Parrott, a Hawaiian-born weaver who lives in Santa Fe, N.M., makes many of her dyes."

She was born in Honolulu on Feb. 12, 1929, to Japanese American parents who had immigrated from Hiroshima in the early 1920s, according to an interview she gave for a Smithsonian Institution oral history project.

In 1954, after graduating from the University of Hawaii, she came to the U.S. mainland to attend the Cranbrook Academy of Art in Michigan. She moved to Albuquerque to teach ceramics and weaving at The University of New Mexico.

In 1956, she married Allen Parrott and moved to Canyon Road in (sic)

Matthew Lane Parrott of Fort Madison was driving a pickup trying to pull another truck, which was stuck in the mud, when the accident at the Iowa Army Ammunition Plant happened earlier this month.

Parrott, 39, who was an IAAP employee, died as a result of injuries he suffered from the accident at the University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics in Iowa City Saturday.

Authorities who assisted in the investigation said Des Moines County Sheriff's deputies responded to the plant in connection with the accident. Investigators said there apparently was an electrical truck that was stuck in the mud. A 2000 Ford pickup driven by Parrott was trying to free the other truck, pulling it using straps.

Two of the straps came lose and threw a piece of metal, which went through the back window of Parrott's truck, hitting him in the back of the head. Parrott's truck then went through a fence and collided into a tree, where it eventually stopped.
An air ambulance crew took Parrott to Iowa City.

Parrott, according to his obituary, worked as a journeyman electrician for IAAP. He is survived by his wife and six children -- three sons and three daughters.
